Vénus
de Lespugue [Upper Palaeolithic]
|

|
This small, ivory statue
dating from the upper Palaeolithic is called the “Lespugue Venus”.
It measures only 15cm high. The statue
is far more than just a female portrait as it reflects clearly the artist’s
vision. A must on your list. |

Venus
de Brassempouy [Upper Palaeolithic]
|
|

|
The
“Venus de Brassempouy” dating from the Upper Palaeolithic belongs to the
astonishing French South-west Gravettian
culture. The hair dress has been chiselled out in neat criss-cross. Her
expressive features add depth. The lack of mouth, although usual in Gravettian
sculptures, is also surprising. There are
only two known sculpture of Palaeolithic women’s heads, this stunning face,
maybe a portrait, is one of them. The other is the “Avdeevo Ivory
statuette” in Ukraine. A worthy heritage that really should be
seen.
